How to Choose a Camping Gear Water Purifier

You must have clean and fresh water wherever you go. Not every place though has suitable drinking water. You may be able to manage with bottled water, but that may not be possible on certain trips. For the times, when you can't bring your own water, you will need a camping gear water purifier. Some camping locations may only offer well water which is not safe for drinking and will require a filtration method. There are lots of purifiers which are perfect for camping.

For example the REI company makes a variety of great purifying products which are suitable for camping. At just under USD$100, you can get the SteriPen which uses UV light to clean the water instead of chemicals. Operation is easy, just press a button and put the pen in the water to be sterilised. The downside to this is that the maximum volume is around 32 ounces. The pen however can be used 5,000 times and has a long battery life.

If you need something bigger, check out the First Need Base Camp Purifier which costs about five times as much as the SteriPen. This uses a chemical free process to sterilise large amounts of water, up to 1000 gallons at a time. This purifier removes large and small particulate matter to ensure the cleanest, freshest safe water for the entire camp site. It will remove chemicals, viruses, bacteria and provides pure water in a short period of time. It is perfect for large camps with lots of people.

Most of us will need something mid-range between the SteriPen and First Need Base Camp Purifier. One popular camping gear water purifier is the MSR MIOX which costs about USD$140. This purifier produces an oxidant which kills even the smallest micro-organisms. There is also a safety indicator which lets you know when your water is safe and ready for drinking. This purifier is affordable, efficient and safe. It is also rugged and can be submersed in water. It is another example of the many purification systems on the market at the moment for campers. In the world today, you can have clean safe drinking water wherever you are!
